This is an old lens someone cut, looks like infiltrated with some epoxy, polished, and put on display at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It is the lens to an electron microscope, hence all the windings of copper seen in crossection (electro-magnetic lens). A quarter is in the foreground for scale.

Spider in web, early morning. It was identified as a Araneus diadematus, family Araneidae by a friend working in entomology.

This is the head of a wasp taken from storage in 70% ethanol, air dried, and then photographed through a stereomicroscope using a digital camera. Although not a high magnification image, you can start to resolve the compound eyes.

This is a colony of bacteria isolated from a mixed waste sludge and then grown onto agar media. You can see a lot of attachment structures between the bacteria and agar. A number of the bacteria are dividing as well.

tobacco mosaic virus

Here is a scanning electron micrograph of a group of tobacco mosaic virus particles. The protein coat or capsid of the virus can be clearly seen. These were simply dried from an infected plant on silicon wafer and then coated with 1 nm of platinum followed by 10nm of carbon. Imaging with a backscatter detector allowed high resolution imaging of only the platinum and gives the cool shadow effect.

This is an image of a biofilm (jello like mush), from a creekbed. You can see diatoms (probably diatoma or fragilariaceae), the biofilm gel, and a few fungi in the image.

Here is a picture of two Giardia protozoans. The organisms are considered parasites as they often contaminate drinking water and infect people.

This is a point on a spider web where two lines intersect, as interpreted with the naked eye. At high resolution, each line is made up of a multitude of strands with diameters as small as 70nm and showing substructure on each strand.

I took this using an electron microscope. It is a series of 32 low magnification images stitched together in photoshop and then colourized. Maybe next I'll put up some images of the spider web.
